Plate tectonics is responsible for two major things. The first is constructive: plate divisions and collisions form the continents separated by the oceas and seas. The collisions raise the land to create - eventually - mountains and hills; and emplace igneous and metamorphic rocks and metalliferous minerals. The second is mainly destructive to human life and activity: earthquakes, sometimes with accompanying tsunami, and volcanism. Continental Drift itself is too slow to be significant in human terms - typically 20mm/year mean speed.
