The Environment Agency have monitoring stations across England and Wales that measure the levels of rivers, lakes, sea and groundwater. Most of the measurements are taken electronically by sensors in the river, store on site and then automatically sent through to databases used by there forecasting system.

This information is used to predict possibility of flooding. If flooding is forecast, the Environment Agency's Floodline issues warning. It also gives advice on what to do before , during and after a flood.
