There is a sword fight in Romeo and Juliet during Act 3, Scene 1, between Tybalt and Mercutio. Romeo tries to intervene, leading to Mercutio's death. This event sets off a chain reaction of tragic events in the play.
There were two rival gangs- the Montagues and the Capulets (neither of which sounds remotely Italian) Romeo, up and coming gangster, well gets in his fill of knifeplay. His lady friend is related to the other gang, hence the Star crossed lovers. As it is in a sense a crime drama from the crimester"s side ( Like Bonnie and Clyde) well it is only natural that battles erupt! Both principals commit suicide with a combination of knockout drops and edged weapons.

Tybalt challenges Romeo to a sword fight, which Romeo declines, but Mercutio accepts in Romeo's place. Tybalt wounds Mercutio when Romeo attempts to break up their fight. Mercutio dies and, in a rage, Romeo kills Tybalt. This results in the Prince banishing Romeo for life, only hours after his secret marriage to Juliet.
