Both objects are acted on by the force of the expanding gases in the bore.

The forces forward and backward have to be equal.

The motion they produce ... the forward motion of the shot and the rearward

motion of the cannon ... are in inverse proportion to their masses, so that the

linear momentum after the shot is the same as the linear momentum before the

shot, namely zero.

The forces are equal. Only reasons the ball goes Flying off and the cannon stays in place, is that the cannon is so much heavier than the ball.

Newton's Third Law: the force of the cannon against the cannonball is equal (but opposite in direction) to the force of the cannonball against the cannon.

If a cannon ball is fired from a cannon pointed parallel to the ground with enough force the cannon ball will?

If fired fast enough, it can either begin orbit (unless/until it hits something else that stops it), or escape Earth's gravity and begin travel through space (again, until it hits something).

Is normal force a contact force?

Because like a cannon when the cannon ball comes out the cannon goes forward that's reaction force. Normal force is where the force does not use a ton of force so you don't see it react.

If the force that propels a cannonball forwad is 500N how much force will move the cannon backward?

The forces are equal in both directions. The momentum of the shot is also equal to the momentum of the cannon in the other direction. The backward velocity of the cannon is: (forward velocity of the shot) times (mass of the shot) divided by (mass of the cannon).

What is the total momentum of cannon and shell before and after firing?

Before the cannon is fired, the momentum is zero. So, after firing, the momentum must still be zero. The momentum of the shell is equal and opposite to that of the cannon, because there is an action and an equal reaction force. Since the momentum difference must be equal: (mv)cannon = (mv)shell Thus, (mv)c - (mv)s = 0 A simple way of looking at it is this is: If the shell is 100 times lighter than the cannon then the shell will move off 100 times faster than the cannon recoils. Remember that, in explosions, the lighter portion moves off faster than the heavier one.
