French people of Catholic descent usually do not eat meat on Fridays. (It is a definite no-no on the Holy Friday, for observant Catholics). In French canteens, fish is served on Fridays.

French People of Muslim descent do not eat pork. The meat has to be halal, i.e. prepared along certain lines (especially the way animals are slaughtered). This is equally true for people of Jewish descent, who eat Cacher meals. Depending of their declared religion, peole can get alternative courses when eating in canteens, for example in military canteens.

There is no official religion in France, France is a secularist and laïc country.

In France, separation between Church and state have been scrupulously enforced since Napolean's time. So there is no Official Religion in France. However, there are a great many Catholics in France. Catholics in France still follow the old Catholic teaching and eat fish on certain days, such as Good Friday.

The main reasons why the French eat what they eat are

  • they are hungry
  • the food is available to them
  • it is nutritious
  • they like the taste of it

In fact the food in France is delicious; foreigners who refuse to even try frog's legs do not know what they are missing.
