I just learned this. Communists wanted to spread communism. And russias army was scary. USA was like screw that, we're not going to bow to anybody. NUKES. But Russia responds quickly, and because they have a single party communist government at the time which pretty much means no elections, they have exellent spys. So Russia discovers the nuke tech. from the USA then the cold war is on. Not helped by the cultural revolution in China; USA backed the side that lost. Basically the communists won.
Haha, it's definitely not a threat to a capitalist society. Real communism has failed almost everywhere (i.e. Russia), but do some research into China's government system. We call them communist, but its actually a hybrid Communism-Capitalist system, and that seems to be working for them. The main government systems, democracy vs communism have sort of started to converge a bit anyways. (Think about it, while the USA is considered a democracy, when's the last time a non Republican/Democrat system of government has been in place?, your choices is as trivial as Pepsi vs Coke, it really doesn't matter who's in power because they both work together, and they sure you are shamed if you choose someone else "the ideology that your throwing your vote away if you vote for another party".) Democracy has really degraded recently in the USA, they abuse the Presidential system by moving the blame from the actual parties to the current President, and the party comes out smelling like a white rose. Also, with all of the technology we have today, why don't we have an electronic voting system? Democracy works by proxying your vote through a congressman, but we have so much technology now, this is completely moot... Why not just have an electronic system and let everyone vote on each individual issue?
Anyways, a communist system doesn't threaten a capitalist system, as the current largest communist system is actually capitalist.
Communism in the sense of the term meant by Marx, Engels, Lenin, Trotsky and others is dedicated to the revolutionary overthrow of capitalism and the establishment of socialism throughout the world, leading to a global transition to a classless, peaceful, harmonious society. During times of crisis capitalism becomes fully exposed as a system that works only for the benefit of the capitalist class, everyone only suffers. In times like these the system becomes much easier to challenge and it is possible for mass movements to form. These mass movements can then overthrow capitalism and build a socialist society if they have the correct consciousness and are led correctly.
