The iris is the coloured membrane in the eye that controls the amount of light entering the eye by expanding and contracting. The pupil is a hole in the centre of the iris. By expanding, more light will enter the pupil and by contracting less light will enter the pupil.

∙ 11y agoThe iris dilates in dimmer light to allow more light into the eye through the pupil then lens, through the inner eye onto the retina, and finally to the optical nerve. The iris will contract when lots of light is exposed to the eye to allow less light into the eye, so we are not blinded.

∙ 13y agoThe iris is the part of the eye that changes the pupil. When the iris makes the pupil smaller, less light gets into the eye. When the iris makes the pupil bigger, more light gets into the eye.
