How does the main character of Ellen foster change from the beginning of the story to the end?

I think that Ellen changes in many ways throughout the book. At the beginning, Ellen is very racist towards Starletta. For example, she won't even drink or eat anything from their house. At then end of the book, Ellen has pretty much gotten over her racist feelings and she loves Starletta for who she is. Another way that Ellen has changed during the book is that she doesn't think that she lives such a hard life anymore. The last two sentences of the book are, "And all this time I thought I had the hardest row to hoe. That will always amaze me." The world isn't against her- it's against Starletta.
