The mileage meter or odometer is calibrated to recognize that the wheels are turning forward. This is done in several ways including servo counters and mechanical linkages.
i know you can drive motorcycles and tanks but i don't know about cars

When you drive to work, record your starting mileage on your cars odometer, and when you get to work subtract the current odometer to get the difference. That's how many miles your home is from work

I believe that you have been told a bit of a fib. Those cars are not real cars. They are simply animated cartoons. They only move(drive) by manipulation of their positions on the screen by a computer.
you'd be surprised to know that cars haven't changed at all. they all still have four-wheels and drive on the road.
All Subaru cars offer really good gas mileage. Any of them would be a great deal. I think they are mostly the same as well, I know they all get greater than 20 miles a gallon.
