Molecular orbital theory predicts that ground state diatomic oxygen has two unpaired electrons (it is a diradical) which occupy its pi orbitals. These unpaired electrons produce a magnetic moment and are responsible for the paramagnetic property of diatomic oxygen.

How are the empirical and molecular formulas for a compuond related?

An empirical formula is a brutto formula; a molecular formula explain the structure of a molecule.

How did ancient philosophers explain the different properties of iron and water?

Ancient philosophers like Aristotle believed that objects had inherent properties due to their elemental makeup. They explained the different properties of iron and water as a result of their composition of primary elements: iron was associated with the earth element and water with the water element. This theory suggested that the properties of substances were determined by their elemental composition.

How does the structure of water explain the physical and chemical properties of water?

The molecule structure of water has a strong bond, therefore water is a very stable compound. The structure has also a lot of hydrogen bridges, which add to its stability. Because of that and so much more, water has its unique properties. And it's because of its molecular structure that life on earth was even developed in the first place.

How do earth's magnetic properties explain how compass work?

The magnet in the compass is attracted to the magnetic field in the Earth's core. The N on the compass always point to magnetic north.... Don't get that confused with geographical north. They are different. Hope this helps.

Explain how elements in the same group are similar?

They have the same outer electron structure and thus similar chemical properties.

Permanent magnets can lose their magnetic properties if they are heated Explain why magnetic properties are lost under these conditions?

Ferro magnetic materials that exhibit ferro magnetism loose their properties by converting themselves into diamagnetic substances. The magnetic properties of ferro materials are due to strong magnetic domains inside the material. A domain is nothing but a group of molecules having same magnetic orientation. When heated these molecule due agitation caused by internal energy scatter and the phenomenon of domains no longer exist and hence they act as diamaterials loosing magnetism.

How do properties of lipids help explain the structure of the cell membrane?

Lipids do give cells membranes a flexible structure that forms a strong barrier between the cell and the cell surroundings. Hence, the lipid surrounds the structure which then forms the shape of the cell.
