The particles of a liquid move from one place to another although they are close together. Because of this, a liquid changes shape depending on the container they are put in. It does not have a fixed shape. The volume of a liquid is fixed; it can be measured.

The particles, or atoms and molecules, vibrate simultaneously and create the liquid. The particles in the liquid are able to move freely due to only being firmly and not rigidly bound. The particles being heated cause them to break and separate. The particles being cooled cause them to come together and hold in place. The temperature and pressure of the liquid is what tells the particles where and how to be held and this causes the volume and shape of the liquid.

Because its particles are free to move, a liquid has no definite shape. However, it does have a definite volume.
