They work like any other muscles except they contract in a set pattern and in a set way. Each muscle cell can beat on its' own. If you place several muscle cells in a dish, and keep them separate, they will beat on their own. Not together. If you push them together one by one, they will begin to beat in rhythm with one acting as the pacemaker.

The entire heart acts somewhat like this. There are two pacemakers. A major one and a minor. If the major one is damaged, the minor one (slower) will take over the job. There is also a conduction system that carries the messages from the pacemakers to all the cells.
This system produces contraction that begin in the top two chambers (atria) and then into the lower larger chambers. This you can hear when you listen to the beat. It sounds like this: lubb...dupp.

No, cardiac muscles do not work in pairs. They are arranged in a network within the heart and work together in a coordinated manner to contract and pump blood throughout the body. The contraction of cardiac muscles is regulated by electrical signals from the heart's pacemaker cells.

Why will your heart beat faster after you run?

- Muscles require oxygen to function - When running, you are working muscles - Blood carries oxygen, the heart pumps blood When running, as the muscles require more oxygen to work harder, the heart must pump blood around your body quicker, delivering more oxygen to the muscles that require it. The way that the heart does this is to increase heart rate.

Why are all the muscles at the top of the heart?

The heart IS a muscle. If you're talking about skeletal muscles, then they are not all at the top of your heart (because what about your abdominal muscles, thigh muscles, calf muscles, etc?)
