Pancreatic enzymes aren't "activated" until they reach the small intestine. If they're activated just after they're produced, pancreatitis can result as the enzymes try to digest the pancreas.

Is tears a chemical barrier against pathogens?

yes, tears prevent pathogens from entering the eye. when an irritation occurs the eye produces a salty liquid (tears) to clean the eye from any dust or pathogens. eyelashes also prevent pathogens and dust from entering. In terms of a chemical barrier, your tears contain the enzyme lysozyme which can disrupt the cell walls of gram-positive bacteria by digesting the peptidoglycan in them. This enzyme is also found in your saliva.

How does hypocalcemia prevent insulin secretion?

To release insulin from the endocrine pancreas cells, the vesicles in the cell need calcium to bind to the internal cell membrane and eject their contents into the blood stream. If a person (or animal) is hypocalcemic (has low blood calcium levels), there isn't enough calcium in the pancreas cell to release the insulin.
