If you had your hazmat endorsement prior to 2005, in order to renew it, you had to pay something like $96 for a TSA background check. All new drivers who applied for a hazmat endorsement after the background checks were implemented had to do the same. A lot of drivers who had the hazmat endorsement prior to 2005, but were not actively using it, typically dropped the endorsement from their CDL - myself included.

This one is applicable nationwide, as it's a matter of federal law - you must be 21 to get a hazmat endorsement.
