Plants absorb energy from the sun. They use the energy to make chemicaal changes in the molecules in their cells. Plants die and eventually get buried in dirt and more dead plants. After many years, the underground temperatures and pressures are just right to convert and squeeze the petroleum out of what's remaining of the original plant. The petroleum contains the chemical energy which was in the plants when they died.
