Battlefield 4 carries over the takedown mechanic from Battlefield 3 albeit with new features. Most notability players can now perform knife takedowns from every direction and can counter-knife frontal melee attacks to balance out frontal takedowns.
When a player is melee attacked from the front, they will have a limited time frame in which they can counter the attack by pressing the "melee attack" button. The button will be different depending on the game platform and control layout.
