Most them start out by entering the primaries. Once nominated the candidate travels around the country meeting voters and making speeches. An efort is made to get him news coverage. He may appear on TV shows. His party produces TV and radio commericals showing him and his positions. Thousands of posters are printed and hung up. Ads appear in newspapers and magazines.
In recent years it has become customary to hold 2 or 3 debates with the opposition.

Ideally the president should be the person who would be most likely to do a good job in this very difficult position. Unfortunately the skills required to be nominated and run a successful campaign are not the same as those needed to do the job and those would be good at the job rarely want to quit their current job and go through the ordeal of the campaign without any certainty of being elected. So, I guess the best choice for president would be someone with the popular appeal needed to be elected and the good sense to surround himself with competent people whose advice he would heed.

Campiagn finance reform is when corporations give the one of the presidents money for their campaign. If the president that the corporation gave money to wins the campaign then the president will treat that corporation better and special.
