Today's Republican Party is nothing what it used to be as late as 20 years ago! I used to be a proud progressive Republican until I became so disinchanted it that I left in 2004 and am now a liberal Democrat. The GOP has purged almost all moderates and for sure, all liberals from the party. Today, only conservatives and extremists are in control and all but 3 Republicans in the House of Representatives, are very conservative! There are only 2 Republican moderates left in the Senate, both from Maine. The GOP is pushing a bill in the House to make it a felony for any doctor that performs an abortion, even though it is perfectly legal! They also want to defund Planned Parenthood, even though only 3% of services performed, is abortion-related. The Republicans are controlled by the Tea Party which is an extremist group, made up of mostly older white men and women! The GOP has very few minorities represented by them in the House or Senate. There are no asians, very few Hispanics and only 2 blacks in the House. The Republican Party is so out of the mainstream now that its a very hard sell on their party to attract women and minorities!
Typically, conservatives and Republicans oppose the legalization of same-sex marriage. Traditionally, Republicans oppose the legalization of same-sex marriage. However, since the 2012 Presidential election, there has been some movement in the Republican Party to accept civil unions or otherwise move away from a position opposing same-sex marriage as many feel that the issue has reached a tipping point and that it is no longer possible to win a national election on a platform opposing it.
As of 2014, Republicans are divided on the issue; however, the official Republican Party platform opposes same sex marriage.
