the bones protect the lungs that breath

not only that, the movement of the bones help the amount of air that can be taken in or let out

during inspiration (i.e; taking air in), the ribcage moves upwards and outwards (because of the contraction of external intercostal muscles and relaxation of internal intercostal muscles), this causes the sternum (chest bone) to move up and away from the ribcage. as a result, the 'dorsoventral' diameter of the thorax (lung cavity) increases. more air can now be taken in.

during expiration, the action is entirely opposite to this
