A jumping saddle is often used for riders in horse equestrian competitions. It is designed to seat the rider more forward, closer to the horse. It is often used in vaulting and reining.

The saddle can be made up of four textures- Leather (Most used), Rubber, Cotton, and, widely used in the 'cavalry' ages, rawhide (used for the base. It is attached by a strap of different sizes called a 'girth', which wraps from one end of the saddle under the horse and ends on the other side. It MUST hug the horse to prevent any saddle movement. The saddle is made up of many parts. There are- Stirrups, Horn, Seat, Leg Strap, Spine, and more. The horn is used for balance on a western saddle. On an English there are no horns. You can add a breast collar for more support as far as keeping the saddle in place (keeps it from moving back) and sometimes a 'rear strap' which wraps around the horse's tail to keep it from moving forward (mostly on an English saddle).

The saddle is an item of tack which is secured onto the horses back for riding by the girth (a strap which goes under the horse's belly and is tightened as the horse breathed in and out throughout the ride to make sure the saddle does not slip). The main reason for a saddle is to support the rider in their seat when they ride, and with the aid of the stirrups it helps for a quick and easy mount onto the horse. There are different types of saddles, made for different types of riding, or simply eventing.

How long does it take to saddle a horse?

A handmade saddle takes about 10 days from start to finish for an experienced saddle maker. A saddle maker can work on several saddles at once because there are some stages when it has to dry for a long period of time before the next step can be taken.

How do you soften a stiff saddle?

Most saddles can be softened through regular use. However, if this doesn't work after a couple of weeks, it may be best to oil the saddle, to soften the leather. It the saddle is old and used to fit the horse, but has sunk and hardened, it may be best to re-flock the saddle (put in new foam to lift the saddle) so that the saddle fits correctly. For this, it may be best to call in someone with experience and this can be quite fiddly.

Where did the idea to invent the western saddle come from?

Cowboys needed a saddle that was comfortable to sit in and work in because they're sitting in that saddle from dawn til dusk. They also needed a saddle that they could rope and herd cattle in, as well as something that was comfortable (relatively speaking) for the horse to wear on his back all day.

What is a numnah?

A numnah is a special type of saddle cloth. It is the same shape as the saddle, usually padded heavily around the edges and very thick. It is often made of wool or a similar material and is very thick and absorbent. It makes good cushioning for a saddle. They are often used under Australian pleasure or work saddles, which are a cross between the deep seat of a Western saddle and lightness and more fitted shape of an English saddle.
