The setting is where the story takes place. Sometimes, the setting is not important for the mood -- the story of the Heroic Quest, for example, can take place anywhere from a fantasy countryside to a big city to outer space. Sometimes, the setting helps set the mood, as in a Horror story set in a spooky old house or a romantic story set in an exotic location.

The Grapes of Wrath is set during the Great Depression in the United States, primarily in Oklahoma, along Route 66, and in California. The novel follows the Joad family as they face economic hardship, drought, and societal injustices during this tumultuous period.

In my opinion, The Grapes of Wrath was all about hope and strength. My favorite quote from the novel is, "I know this ... a man got to do what he got to do." And that's just what the "Okies" did, whatever was necessary for survival. To become successful, you must try. Perseverance is key. Now, nearly anyone could relate perseverance back to their life, whether it be about sports, a club, a hobby or even personal troubles.
