Heat is the speed of the particles the higher the speed the higher the heat. Density or state of matter is the distance between the particles the closer the particles the higher the density, the density of the particles determines the state of matter here they are from most dense to least dense; Solid, Liquid, Gas, and Plasma. the temperature (heat) of a substance can also determine the state of matter a substance is with higher heat at lower densities. PS the density/state list does not apply to water. PS Quantum state is not currently an official state yet, it would be the most dense and at the lowest temperature.
Other factors that can affect the settling rates are volume. ( whether it has increased or decreased). The lighter particles can catch wind and glide as their falling, resulting in a slower settling rate. The speed and turbulence of the fluid the particles are flowing in can also affect the settling rates. Lastly, the weight of the particles.
Greater density causes particles to settle faster.
The substance's state (solid / liquid / gas), density, temperature, etc, is determined by motion and spacing of particles.

Density is inversely proportional to volume. If the same amount of stuff takes up a larger volume, it will have a lower density. 1 kg of air is slightly below one cubic meter, but 1 kg of water is about the size of your milk carton. As the temperature of an object increases, it's volume increases. This means that temperature is directly proportional to volume. Since temperature is directly proportional to volume, and volume is inversely proportional to density, thus density is inversely proportional to temperature. In the physical sense, you can visualize temperature as the energy (spacing) between particles and density as how much particles you can put in a box. As temperature goes up, the spacing of particles increase. Therefore, you cant put so much particles into the same sized box.

Particle spacing is the closest together in solids. In liquids the spacing is close, however the particles have the freedom of movement. In gas, the particles have lots of kinetic energy, therefore they are far apart.
Population density is the number of individuals in a population that occupy a definite area. Population spacing is how apart the organsms are arranged in a given area.
Alpha particles can pass through very few materials. The spacing between nuclei of the material would have to be enormous for an alpha particle to pass through. The passage of alpha particles simply depends on the density of the material.
