a simple way of answering this question would be that the stomach creates it's own acid that almost makes a protective layer on the inside of the stomach. this stops bad germs and diseases that come in through food/water from eating away at the stomach.
It's also lined w/ mucus which protects your stomach from bacteria & the acids inside your stomach from eating itself away
It has a thick coat of mucus on it's walls.
Mucus cells line the interior walls with slime.
Your stomach has a special wall so the digestive acids dont hurt it.
A coat secreted by the mucous cells contain bicarbonate. It keeps the stomach acid from damaging your stomach.

Protein digestion occurs in stomach only because it is safe for the body, as stomach has mucous secretions which prevents self digestion of stomach muscles by PEPSIN (enzyme for protein digestion) :)
Without mucus your stomach would eat it self. The acids help break food down.
