The father and the lost son were reconciled. The father accepted the son when he returned, gave him a robe, a signet ring and sandals. These are all symbols that the son was reinstated to sonship again.

Some people interpret this parable as meaning sinners who turn to God will be reconciled to God. But I think a better interpretation of this parable is the nation of Israel - represented by the lost son - would have been reconciled to God if they had accepted Jesus as the messiah.
