There is a checksum built into the barcode numbers, just as is commonly done for social security IDs, for instance.
An example checksum could be that the last digit in the barcode number should also be the last digit of the sum of all the previous digits, together with a requirement that the digits cannot all be zero. This would not discover every failed scan, but would find the vast majority of them.
