well, for starters, a telephone line could fall down during a storm and that wouldn`t be good!
Telephones use up energy from the outlets (from charging, and just leaving it there daily) and energy comes from coal which burns up to make energy. The gases from the burned up coal makes Carbon monoxide which isn't very good for the environment.

I don't think we need to write an essay about how phones have changed daily routine of our life. With the arrivals of smart phone, telephone has become a source of personalized entertainment also.
