The UltraCane works by detecting obstacles in the users path by emitting ultrasonic echoes via two sensors located on the handle. The UltraCane then converts the information on the distance and location of the object into tactile feedback via two buttons which are also located on the handle. The nearer the obstacle is to the user, the faster the vibration is from the tactile buttons. The UltraCane detects obstacles within two ranges, 2 metres and 4 metres. It also detects obstacles at head height like overhanging tree branches, wing mirrors on lorries etc. The UltraCane is used by visually impaired and blind people. It is an advanced electronic mobility aid and comes in ten different lengths.

When blind or visually impaired people use their existing white canes, they use the cane tip to locate obstacles and so literally have to walk into the object to see what it is, how high it is etc., but with the UltraCane, the person no longer has to do this, they can simply detect the obstacles using the tactile information from the UltraCane and simply walk around the obstacle safely without going any where near it.
