There are different weak links for different sized and types of glider. Usually blue is for single seaters and red for dual seaters. The way they work is they have a much lower breaking point than the winch wire. This means that if too much force is applied during the launch the weak link will pull and snap before the tension of snapping on the cable will occur. This will drop the parachute and leave the o-ring left in the glider. It really is just for safety.
