The zuiderzee does not exiast anymore. We pumped a part of it dry and made it in to land for people to live on. The rest is still water but is now reverred to as the lakes: Ijsselmeer and Markermeer. The afsluitdijk (literally closure dam) seperates the lakes from the Waddenzee.

The Zuider Zee was an arm of the North Sea and is now a freshwater lake. The idea was originally proposed in 1667. But it was not until the late 1800s and early 1900s that the Dutch perfected a plan to build dikes all the way across the entrance to the Zuider Zee. Since no saltwater flowed into that body of water, it eventually became a freshwater lake. It is now called Ljsselmeer.
It is a shallow inlet of the North Sea in the North West of the Netherlands and covers about 2000 square miles. In the 20th Century it was closed off from the north sea by way of a land reclamation project
