It is considered on of the great civilizations of Ancient Africa becuase it has had a long history of being under the control of Ancient Egypt and then soon took over Ancient Egypt for itself. While under the control of Egypt it adapted parts of its culture and would pay tributes to the Egyptians. When it took over Egypt it was in rule only for less than a hundred years and started to create its own culture again. It went downhill after that and Egypt came to strike back and defeated the Kushite forces.

When people talk about Ancient Syria, they are referring to the Ancient countries that existed where the country of Syria exists now, especially the area near to Damascus and Aleppo (in the west). The most common civilization referred to by Ancient Syria is Aramea, a secondary power in the Middle East that was evenly matched by the two Israelite Kingdoms for hegemony in the Levant, and the origin-country for the Aramaic language.Assyria, by contrast, was an ancient civilization that was predominantly located in what is today northern Iraq (particularly the lands under Islamic State control as of 2015). Assyria eventually conquered Aramea, but the center of the civilization never shifted away from Ninevah (which is modern Ninewa in northern Iraq).

The Celts in France and Britain; Ancient Thrace in what is now Romania; ancient Malta; before the Romans took control of Italy there was an important civilization called the Etruscan; the Minoan civilization from Crete who traded with the ancient Egyptians These are the ones I can recall from memory there were more. Try these names on the internet for more detailed information. When Rome was at the height of her power her main European opponent were the German tribes. The Romans considered them "barbarians" but modern archaeological evidence indicate that they were quite a sophisticated people.
