These groups are also called aggregation. The fish protect them selves in a school by performing a technique some call The knew "edge."
The fish on the outside of the group swim inward and then the knew edge fish swim inward as well and the cycle repeats. The fish never actually stop moving. This is done to reduce the per-individual likelihood of death.
