The body's defense against dust etc starts in the nose. The main function of nose hair is to protect against airborne particles. These hairs are coated in sticky mucous which collect dust. The nose also warms and moistens the aiir we inhale.

Dust that gets past the nose has to pass the pharynx, larynx, enter the trachea before it can get to the lungs. However this part of the respiratory tract is also lined with mucous producing cells. The trachea is lined with hairlike cells called cilia, which waft the mucous, and any particles stuck to it upwards along the "mucociliary escalator" back up to the larynx wehere it is either coughed up or swallowed.

The cough reflex is another important mechanism to protect against foreign particles. Nerve endings in the larynx, trachea and bronchi are sensitive to irriatation, this sends impulses along the vagus nerve to the brains' respiratory centre in the brain stem, which causes the cough.

How does exercise help prevent harmful stress?

The stress response is basically the body's way of preparing to defend against some kind of external danger. The chemistry of the body changes to prepare it for action, like increased heart rate, increased respiration. If a person experiences stress, as in harmful stress, it doesn't know what to do with the excess energy. So exercise helps to burn it off so it doesn't have negative effects on the body.
