There are so many different types of cancers and corresponding treatments. It depends on the type of cancer someone has as to how effective the treatment might be. For example, thyroid cancer if very easy to treat so it's treatment is highly effective. Stage 4 multiple myeloma will have a bad prognosis no matter what the treatment.

With modern treatments the life expectancy of patients with mesothelioma has increased drastically. It also depends on the age of the patient, stage of the cancer and how aggressive the patient wants the treatment to be. At first life expectancy was months but now it has increased to 5 to 10 years or more.
