Well, it sure doesn't help. If the laptop is closed you may get away with no damage. But consider, steam is water and water is an excellent conductor of electricity. If the steam condensates on the keyboard and gets into the electronics, then it can short out if you turn it on. Make sure the laptop is totally dried out before attempting to turn it on.
