East Virginia- - - - There is a Virginia that was one of the original colonies and is still a state. In 1863 the state of WEST VIRGINIA split away from Virginia because Virginia was trying to split away from the United States back in the Civil War. Virginia approved of slavery, West Virginia's people did not approve of slavery and they broke away from Virginia during the civil war.
