That all depends on the area in which it is in. If is on a mountain it would travel quite a distance. If it was in a gorge it would go a little ways but not all that far. In a forest it could travel for miles because it can reverberate off of the trees.

How far do wolves howl?

A howl is a noise. There is no way to choose how far a noise will travel. Wolves will howl as they see fit, then the noise will carry as far as it can. Longer over water. Longer downwind, shorter upwind. Longer over open ground than through forest. If the wind picks up, the sound of the howl soon drowns in the general rustle and noises of the wind.

Why do coyotes yelp?

Primarily, to announce their territory and determine if other coyotes' control territory near their own (e.g. a coyote will howl and then listen for other coyotes to howl back -- if he hears another coyote to the West, than he knows that the land to the West is patrolled and "owned' by a different coyote, and he will respect that coyote's boundaries). They also howl to call their family members back after they split up to hunt. for more info about it go to wikianswers.com/why do coyotes howl :) ;)
