That all depends on the area in which it is in. If is on a mountain it would travel quite a distance. If it was in a gorge it would go a little ways but not all that far. In a forest it could travel for miles because it can reverberate off of the trees.

A howl is a noise. There is no way to choose how far a noise will travel. Wolves will howl as they see fit, then the noise will carry as far as it can. Longer over water. Longer downwind, shorter upwind. Longer over open ground than through forest. If the wind picks up, the sound of the howl soon drowns in the general rustle and noises of the wind.
