This varies greatly depending on the species. Grasshoppers belong to the suborder Caelifera which features more than 11,000 species of grasshopper. Some grasshoppers can only leap short distances, some even less than a meter. Others, such as the band-winged grasshoppers which make up the subfamily Oedipodinae, can glide for over 100 feet. One Carolina Grasshopper was recorded to have flown around a bush for 17 minutes before landing.

As they are hops of varying distances, it is tough to put an actual measurement on how fast a grasshopper is. It can pretty much hop instantly after hitting the ground, but time is affected by each hop being a different length than that last.

One advantage for an animal that can leap high and far is that it allows them to make very sudden escapes, in the case of a surprise attack. For frogs, they can also leap in order to rapidly get closer to an insect an catch it with their long, sticky tongue.
