The damage caused by Hurricane Katrina could have been minimized if they would move all of the homes located behind the levies to higher ground. The human suffering could have been alleviated if everyone had followed the evacuation orders.
It all depends where on the East Coast you live. I lived in Florida for 10 years and we got hit by hurricanes at least once a year. But, they were not all to the magnitude of hurricanes such as Katrina or Andrew (1992). I lived in Pennsylvania for 4 years and then later 2 years, and as far as I can recall, we were never hit by a hurricane. Although the most recent hurricane, Hurricane Irene I think it was, hit PA.

Hurricane Katrina traveled in several different directions. It originated in the Bahamas initially it's main course was west. It grazed the southern portion of Florida and once it entered the Gulf of Mexico, it took a more northerly direction.

Hurricane Irene is not expected to directly hit Pennsylvania, though it will feel Irene's effects. The storm should move by on late Saturday into early Sunday (August 27-28).

Move to Kansas, I have never heard of anyone in Kansas being stressed by a hurricane.
A hurricane move over the water rather than taking the water with it. That is why they weaken when they move over an area of cold water.
