When women have an ectopic pregnancy, they may not know that they are pregnant at the time. Usually, signs of an ectopic pregnancy would include pelvic or abdominal pain, vaginal spotting or if the fallopian tube ruptures, there may be signs of shock.

I was having severe pains with my first at 5 weeks pregnant and they rushed my into hospital to check it out. Its usually around this time you will find out as the egg implants and starts to grow. sometimes you can last to around 8 weeks until you find out.

Please clarify this question.

An ectopic pregnancy is when the embryo implants outside the uterus; usually in the fallopian tube or ovary. This early symptoms mirror those of a normal pregnancy, but will also cause severe pain and vaginal bleeding later on if not handled by medical professionals. This is very dangerous to the mother. It will not result in a live birth.

Depends on where the pregnancy is located, but generally if your serum beta HCG (pregnancy hormone blood test) is above 1200, you can see the pregnancy if its in the uterus, on ultrasound. This is usually after at least 6 weeks of pregnancy.

If you was to have an ectopic pregnancy, it would be from shortly after conception, ectopic pregnancy means the blastocyst has implanted outside the uterus (normally in the tubes), so when your due period has come normally a test would come up positive (as when it implants it still releases hcg), signs of an ectopic pregnancy are: bleeding/ spotting red blood/ or even just like a period, pregnancy test going fainter - instead of darker, pain in the left or right side near your ovaries. If you have any of these symptoms then I would seek medical advice asap, as an ectopic pregnancy is very serious, and if not treated/removed/terminated, then it could result in not being able to have children, internal bleeding etc.

Do you need an ultrasound to tell if you have an ectopic pregnancy?

Yes, you do. An ectopic pregnancy is just like a "regular" pregnancy for the first few weeks. Everything feels the same. An ultrasound is done early in a pregnancy to check things out, and if a pregnancy is ectopic, a good ultrasound technician will be able to spot it. There is no other non-invasive way to discover an ectopic pregnancy, and because of the risks posed by an ectopic pregnancy, it is critical to discover it early - if in fact there is one. Ectopic pregnancies are invariably life-threatening events, and prenatal care is important for that and many other reasons.

Should you be concerned if you're 4 weeks pregnant after having an ectopic pregnancy 9 months ago and you're spotting today but there is no cramping and you have not spotted since 5 days ago?

Many women can spot after getting pregnant, but because you had a ectopic pregnancy it's best to see your doctor and have a check-up. You should be working closely with your doctor for the first few months. Many women have one ectopic pregnancy and go on to have many healthy babies, so don't worry. I think you would feel better if you heard those words from a doctor. Good luck and Congratulations! Marcy
