You don't go on the highway but you do go onto the main road and road in a business park where there could be a lot of traffic around. The big difference here is with parallel parking. They do not have a curb but a yellow painted line with cones behind them. Other testing sites has a curb.

If you refer to the parallel parking part of the "skills" test...it is 25' long and six feet deep. To pass, you have to park within 18" of the "curb." a former WV DMV troop.
On an NY road test, expect to take an emissions test and to take a right out of the DMV then a left onto a side street 2 minutes away. Take right turn onto another street and do a turnabout before doing an uphill parking and back to the DMV.
