It depends where it is going.

The coastline is the outline of a coast from state to state. It is usually pretty rugged, and from an airplane it is easily established what is land and what is the ocean.
Hot air balloons infuenced the idea of gliders, which lead to the first airplane. the impact of the first airplane was quite huge. since the first airplane, people can travel faster over water and land in less amount of time, and they can travel longer distances. not to mention the great deal airplanes did for the military!
You might be thinking of a plateau
Airplanes in flight can be just a few feet from the surface, during air shows and demonstrations, or when more than 500 feet from people or structures over water and in remote areas. Airliners usually fly around 35,000 feet or about 11,000 meters above the "standard datum plane" which on a "standard" day would be the same number of feet and meters above sea level. So by subtracting the "height above sea level" of the land the airliner is above from the number shown on the airliner's altimeter you get the "height above ground." Usually this means a distance of an airliner in the air to land of between five and six "statute" miles.
There was so many ways to get in the Olympic venue. If you are near on the event, then you can have a land trasportation. If you are crossing a county then you may travel by riding an airplane.
Is there enough land to land the airplane safely.

A canal is usually a man-made waterway for travel or for draining and watering land.
