Mesarthim, also known as Gamma Arietis, is a binary star system located in the constellation Aries. It consists of two stars that are both spectral type A, specifically A4V and A5V, indicating they are main-sequence stars that are hotter and more luminous than the Sun. These stars are characterized by their white color and are approximately 164 light-years away from Earth.
There are three major stars in the Aries constellation: Hamal (Alpha Arietis), Sheratan (Beta Arietis), and Mesarthim (Gamma Arietis).
There are 47 stars in the constellation, Scorpius, which appear in the Bayer/Flamsteed catalogues.
Mesarthim is a triple star system or, if you prefer, a double star with a companion third star. They lie some 204 light years distant in the constellation Aries, the ram. The pair comprises Gamma Arietis, and both have a lot of similarity to each other. Gamma-1 is hotter with a temperature of about 11,000 Kelvin. Gamma-2 has a temperature of between 9200 and 9800 Kelvin. Gamma-C is several magnitudes less bright than the either of the stars in the binary pair, and it stands off about 30 times the distance between the double stars.
To draw the Aries constellation, start by sketching a small triangle to represent the prominent stars: Hamal, Sheratan, and Mesarthim. From the triangle, extend two lines to create the ram's horns and add a curved line to depict the body. You can emphasize the stars by making them larger or adding dots for the fainter stars in the area. Finally, label the main stars if desired for clarity.
