To be honest, fashion doesn't really help you with your self-esteem. In the term self-esteem is the word "self." So confidence and all that comes from yourself. It comes from the inside, not what you wear or put on.

That said, sometimes if you are in an emotional funk, then updating your wardrobe and style might help. If dressing nice will motivate you more to go out with friends and have a good time, then by all means do it. Fashion might be enough of a crutch to help you take actions that will improve your self-esteem.
