Jackson's troops were known for their rapid marches, covering great distances in relatively short time frame. They earned the nickname"Jackson's Foot Cavalry."
I like your reference of "old jack's foot cavalry". Just keep in mind that he did command infantry. His 1st Virginia Brigade marched so fast, that they were given this nickname. (Among other things.) His brigade was known to be extremely quick. Jackson pressed his men so hard, that some would pass out or even die of exhaustion. They were able to march about 400 miles in somewhere around a month. That was when the conditions were good, and everything was in the south's favor.
Thomas Jackson got his nickname Stonewall because he would never let his brigade retreat. He was a general during the Civil War.While after part of war Thomas was leaning against a stonewall and someone shouted 'Hey look it is Stone Wall Jackson'. And it got a ring to it and became his nickname. He acquired his nick name 2 weeks later after the First battle of Bull Run (Battle of Manassas)The union were beating the confederates at first, later Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson told every to stand their ground. He stood there waiting then the confederates got a comeback which made them win the First Battle of Bull Run.The reason he got the nickname is because he stood his ground while the Union were winning.
Chancellorsville (May 1863) A brilliant victory that demonstrated Lee's two greatest talents - wrong-footing the enemy by refusing to fight on a field of their choosing, and ordering fast, bold, nimble attacks carried out by Stonewall Jackson. Stonewall, of course, was killed at this battle.
1 The North had too much territory to invade 2 The South could not replenish fast enough
Stonewall. It will never be known whether this was meant as a compliment or an insult. Brigadier-General Barnard Bee is known to have shouted "There is Jackson standing like a stone wall!" He is supposed to have added "Rally behind the Virginians.", praising Jackson's gallantry. Others claim that he was criticising Jackson for refusing to come across to help him. As Bee was mortally wounded a few hours later, it was not possible to confirm what he meant, but the nickname stuck.
T.J. Jackson. It was at the war's first pitched battle (Bull Run), where a Confederate Brigade-commander, Barnard Bee shouted "There is Jackson standing like a stone wall!" It is not known whether he was praising Jackson for standing fast or criticizing him for not coming over to help. As Bee was mortally wounded in the battle, nobody was able to ask him which one he meant!
