Honestly whenever you feel like it or start developing problems with your piece due to over use. I tend to clean out my stuff once they start getting clogged up with tar or the piece doesn't smoke as well as it used to.
Easy Cheap way to clean your piece:
Don't buy commercial products/"special" smoke shop bong cleaners, they are a rip off for something you can easily make at home. All you need is a $2.00 bottle of isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) from a store like Walmart and some salt to mix into it.
Sake the solution inside a bong, or toss your pipe into a plastic bag, and shake for 5 min and dump out the solution. If you are a real neat freak and want your piece to sparkle like new, you should grab some cue-tips/pipe cleaners. Dip these guys into the solution so you can scrub down every inch of your decorations to perfection. You will be amazed where smoke residue can get trapped along decorations. (Also wet a pipe cleaner and snake it down your bong shaft to take out any additional junk trapped inside).
If you have a clay bong that's colored and stuff I would recommend having a dunk tank full of water at the ready so you can do a little cleaning and flush the bong with water in the tub. I'm not sure if its necessary, but its the only safe way to make sure the colors don't fade due to an over exposure to the alcohol.
Always super rinse out your piece once you finish to protect their color's from fading. The last thing you want to hit is a piece that still has an alcohol and salt flavor to it lol.
