Gutenberg invented the printing press. With that, it allowed for literary works to be mass produced very quickly, distributed en masse, and reach a much larger audience. Before that, it took a much longer time to copy literary works, and distribution was fairly limited by that constraint. With the printing press, knowledge could be spread much farther and much faster.
