The Catholic Church was a very important part in the lives of people in this time. It ruled kings and set the standards for the society. Because of these things it unified people. It gave them holy days, churches to center their lives, places to turn to and taught them The Bible. Often monks were the only people to provide health care in an area.
Divide, massive atrocities in France and huge violence between Catholics and Protestants (barely different) that continued to this day.
Unite, the Crusades forged international unity between even bitter foes like England and France, as they fought a common enemy under one banner. Still bloodshed, though.

It can do both. The Muslims and Christians in Africa and the Middle East don't get along, but in Europe and the US they do a better job of it.
Charlemagne helped cause the unity in Europe by trying to have everyone unite through the religion Christianity. (There are some more factors in what united Europe, but that was all I could find.)
It wasn't the size and the shape of the countries that helped the people divide or unite them, but the location. Each countries population centers are found in a few areas. They are not scattered all over.
