We see him as a lonely child abandoned boarding school by his father even on Christmas Day when all his school friends where home with loving families. This a stray of his self reliance and not liking a time in the year when the Christmas spirit to him was loneliness. Later we see him apprenticed to dear old Fezziwig who scrooge admired because of his care for others. Seeing his mentor suddenly hauled away to debtors court and made bankrupt hurt scrooge. Yet again his life was thrown in turmoil. In this time he becomes engaged to Belle. Someone he was to love. He loses his sister Fan in childbirth. Freed his nephew is brought in to the world and his poor sister is taken. Scrooge sets about aiming to make himself a success. He was not going to allow the fate as Fezziwig to befall him. Sadly his focus becomes to business like, he mistakes making huge amounts of money as as sign of success which Belle seeds as his new love , a golden idle. He now loses 'Belle. This drives him deeper into work. He joins forces with Jacob Marley, who like scrooge is business focused.
