If I look at two people of disreputable character, I can not tell which one is a Christian and could have been guided by the Holy Spirit and which one is an atheist. One has character flaws in spite of the best efforts of the Holy Spirit. The other simply has character flaws.
Whatever people judge my character to be (and I trust them to be charitable in their assessments) I have never been guided by the Holy Spirit.

I do not know what your view of confirmation is. Confirmation allows you to be filled with the holy Spirit and to be guided by it.
