Leon Kossover was the inventor of the donut hole. While working in a bakery in the 1950's, he was making donuts one day. When asked to take all of the holes that were punched out of the donut's roll them out to make more donuts, he had the idea to leave them the way they were, cook them and put toppings on them. His boss liked this idea. He packaged them in groups of 12 and sold them in the bakery. They were such a huge hit in the bakery they began to sell them in the local stores where they were flying off of the shelves. From that point on, donut holes became the hit that they are today.

originally it was invented by a woman named Amy Diep

Donuts have changed over the years because some donut companies have eliminated trans fat and other ingredients. They have also created different types of donuts, such as cronuts (a croissant and donut combined).

Doughnuts (as it is properly spelled) have a long disputed history. One theory suggest that doughnuts were introduced into North America by Dutch settlers, who were responsible for popularizing other American desserts, including cookies, apple and cream pie, and cobbler. In the 19th century, doughnuts were sometimes referred to as one kind of ""olykoek" (a Dutch word literally meaning "oil cake"), a "sweetened cake fried in fat".

According to antrhopoligist Paul R. Mullins, the first cookbook mentioning doughnuts was an 1803 English volume which included doughnuts in an appendix of American recipes. By the mid-19th century the doughnut looked and tasted like today's doughnut, and was viewed as thoroughly American food.
